This 140-year-old row home presented a unique opportunity to breathe new life into an under-utilized rear yard.

Our goal was to transform a long, narrow backyard – which primarily served as a pass through – into a captivating garden sensitive to the home’s history.

We began by constructing a stone ruin with a timber frame window to draw the eye further into the space. To add sound to the visual allure of the ruin, we incorporated a water feature along the interior wall.

Further into the garden, a sitting area surrounded by a stone seat wall similarly stressed like the stone ruin, provides a perfect place to entertain guests or to sit quietly and enjoy the view of the water feature.
